The story of Tiffany Brar is a unique blend of inspiration, strength and the desire to fight every odd! Blinded shortly after her birth, Tiffany Brar is a born fighter. As a visually impaired individual Tiffany faced distinct discriminations in school and society. Her experiences made her realize the problems that the visually impaired community faces on a daily basis.

Tiffany’s career is essentially inspired by her disability and the discrimination that she and her fellow community members face as persons with disability. She set off on a journey to spend time with more and more visually disabled people and learn about their experiences. Her motive was to change the scenario for fellow members of the visually impaired community and other disabled communities as well.

A non profit that started by Tiffany as a mobile blind school in 2012, is now a fully functional and highly impactful non profit for the visually impaired community and the empowerment of women. The Jyothirgamaya Foundation has attained high visibility and recognition from people across the country. For the work she has put into the organization, Tiffany was addressed as the ‘courageous daughter of India’ by the President and has many awards and recognitions to her name.

Tiffany has broken every challenging barrier of society and has inspired many others. She has also addressed and broken the stereotype of visually impaired people not participating in sports activity. She has done skydiving, paragliding, tandem cycling, rope climbing and a lot more!

7. Meera Shenoy

Meera Shenoy has dedicated her life to training and employing underprivileged and disabled youth. She is the founder of Youth4Jobs, an organization that works with underprivileged and vulnerable youth from villages, skilling and linking them to jobs. Meera also works with several companies and boards to sensitize and make the office environment inclusive for the disabled.

The mantra of her organization is Will to Skill. She has also helped establish EGMM — Employment Generation and Marketing Mission — India’s first skilling mission.

Through Youth4Jobs, Meera has successfully trained 23000 persons with disabilities and has centers spread across 18 states (28 centers) with a placement rate of 85%! It is the largest organization working for the young, disabled and underprivileged in Southeast Asia!

Meera has won several awards in the country as well as internationally for her work. She received the National Award for empowering the disabled people from the President himself!

8. Sujata Sahu

Sujata Sahu is an exceptional woman who is impacting the world greatly through the work she does. An Indian social entrepreneur, Sujata was initially working in the corporate world in the United States. After spending fifteen years in IT in the US she moved back to India to contribute to the social sector.

A solo trip to the remote sections of Ladakh and seeing the state of children and the villages overall, changed Sujata’s perspective in 2010. Having witnessed the conditions of the people living there, Sujata decided to establish a non-profit called 17000ft- dedicated to transforming the lives of children and communities of remote and inaccessible parts of India.

She decided to change the status of such remote villages in the high mountainous regions of Ladakh. Her initiative works towards providing education and changing the lives of children. 17000ft focuses on improving education in govt schools, livelihood opportunities and exposure through interactions with the outside world.

Sujata is the winner of Nari Shakti Puruskar of 2015.

Her work has led to thousands of children get education and have a stronger connection with the outside world.

“My first role model was my sister. She was 14 years older and broke through a lot of barriers. She and others were pioneers in steamrolling pathways for women. When she told her school guidance counselor she wanted to get a degree in economics, he immediately suggested, “Home Economics?” Undeterred, she got her PhD in economics and became a senior executive at the Federal Reserve Bank in the U.S.  When I did my economics degree more than a decade later, it was considered normal.

“The biggest lesson is the importance of believing in yourself. I was lucky in that I was able to ignore gender stereotypes and just get on with my work. I started in the energy field, and I didn’t really notice that I was often the only woman in the room. I realize now I was blessed to be surrounded by men who didn’t make gender an issue. They were very analytical and cared most about getting the right result. It was a strong meritocracy.

“Similarly, I got my first major promotion to VP and group lead when I was five months pregnant. My boss knew that I was going to be on maternity leave, but it didn’t matter—he still saw me as the right person for the job. He was very analytical and fair-minded, and his confidence in me led to great results for the company. I realize now he was a very special man.”

“My first role model was my mother. The part that really influenced me as a youngster was her belief around women and girls being able to take on any challenge without fear. This was a lesson that helped me quite a bit in my first career in criminology, working in halfway houses and with people with addictions who had been in the justice system. It was a very male-dominated profession, and my mother helped me see that I could still succeed even in a place where there were not a lot of people who looked like me.

“My second role model was my first boss in the consulting world. For him, gender was not a factor. He was only concerned about hiring and promoting people who were capable of doing great things, regardless of whether they were men or women. He also really helped me change my beliefs around getting involved in sales and how to engage with our clients. I was very skeptical about a career in sales, but he showed me how rewarding it could be and how it could be pivotal in moving to a leadership role. 
 
“I think women let assumptions and mindset get in their own way a lot of the time. One of the things that I learned when I first started out in the consulting world was that I could master new things. I never thought I’d be involved in sales and had this negative vision of the stereotypical used car salesmen. My mindset changed as I spent more time with customers. I realized sales is about building relationships, helping the customer solve problems, and finding solutions that lead to making strong long-term connections.

“The irony was that I had been shown the ropes in sales by a number of older men, and I thank them for encouraging me. But pretty quickly, I realized a lot of my customers were actually women like me. Ultimately, I saw that I had an advantage because customers expressed a preference for dealing with me. I wouldn’t have been able to do this if I had not been able to change my mindset around what I could and could not do. As women, we need to share our aspirational goals, keep an open mind about the things we can achieve, and realize our differences can become our strengths.”

The person who gave me the best foundation for the person I am today is the psychologist I visited when I was younger. She taught me about the importance of really reflecting on myself and allowing myself to be more comfortable or vulnerable with expressing myself. From that, I built a foundation to have the capacity to become the best version of myself in whatever stage of life I’m in. It’s so important for leaders to be vulnerable, dare to go into the unknown and to really reflect on our decisions. I think I learned this at a very early stage in my life. I’ve learned to look at things from many different angles and that allows me to consider different viewpoints in the decision-making process. That’s one of the greatest gifts I have been given.

Vulnerability has to do with showing people that you’re a human being. That’s one of the first things I changed within the Dutch organization. People were really afraid to talk about their mistakes. I changed this right away and that turned into a very quick win. It was so welcomed because people could relax a little bit more. But in times of uncertainty, you can’t be an uncertain leader. Being human and supporting people who are insecure or fearful of the future requires that you are a strong leader you understands the human element, but you need to project strength and resilience. In uncertain times, you still need to be open and empathetic, but you also need to be the strong pillar in the company. You still want to be the person who everyone can rely upon.

We really do need to become more comfortable sharing that with other people, so others know what you’ve done and what you want to do next with your career. We are more organized, flexible, and can make adjustments more easily than men. That is a great benefit for any leader.

“I also learned that you do not have to avoid having a family to be an executive leader. A lot of younger women think that if they want to become an executive, they cannot have a family. I try to explain that you can do both things. You don’t need to separate these roles—leader and mother. Instead, you need to integrate them, and you will become a better leader.
